The Reflection Room
Slow down. Notice more. Think differently.
The Reflection Room is a guided reflective practice for thoughtful people who want to understand themselves a little better. It provides a useful interruption for the working week, to help you reflect and move forward instead of looping through thoughts that go nowhere. Every eight weeks, we'll explore one psychological theme through contemporary art, poetry and evidence-informed psychology. We'll stay with a single question, giving ourselves time to notice, reflect and make meaning.
This isn't therapy, coaching, or another online course you'll feel guilty for not finishing.
The Reflection Room is a space to think.
Whether you're navigating change, making an important decision, rediscovering yourself, or craving time to pause, The Reflection Room invites you to become more curious about yourself and the stories you carry.
Autumn season: September–November 2026
When Did You Decide That?
An eight-week investigation into the beliefs you've inherited, the values you've chosen, and the stories you're still living.
Many of the beliefs that shape our lives weren't consciously chosen.
Perhaps somewhere along the way you decided that asking for help meant weakness. That success meant being busy. That you weren't creative. That you should always keep the peace. Perhaps those beliefs were inherited from your family, schools, workplaces, cultures, or the communities you've belonged to.
Over eight weeks, we'll investigate those stories together.
Using psychology, contemporary art and poetry as our companions, we'll explore where our beliefs come from, which ones still serve us, and which might be ready to be rewritten.
What you'll get
Over each eight-week season of The Reflection Room, you receive:
Four curated reflection practices, with activities and tasks, delivered by email every fortnight
Four accompanying audio reflections from psychologist and researcher Leila Ainge to guide your thinking

Two live group Zoom sessions of The Reflection Room where we'll reflect together in conversation

Autumn season: 14 September 2026. When Did You Decide That?
Inheritance, beliefs, identity, shedding, rewriting.
Many of the beliefs that shape our lives weren't consciously chosen. As the leaves begin to fall, we investigate the stories we’ve been telling ourselves. We look at where those stories might have come from, and examine which beliefs still serve us, and which ones we can let go of.
Winter season: 9 November 2026. What Counts?
Looking back, achievement, measurement, meaning, illumination, what gets overlooked.
As the year draws in, we naturally start looking back at what we did, what we didn’t do, and whether the year counts. This season is about illumination: noticing what catches the light, what might have been overlooked, and what we want to carry with us into a new year.
New Year season: 11 January 2027. What Are You Making Room For?
Attention, space, possibility, rest, priorities.
With the turning of the calendar, the new year season of The Reflection Room invites us to pay attention to what we really want. We make a deliberate alternative to resolutions, re-examining our priorities and finding the space we need to grow and explore the possibilities of the year ahead.
Spring season: 8 March 2027. What Are You Noticing?
Emergence, curiosity, attention, new evidence.
As we emerge into spring, we follow our curiosity through The Reflection Room. We seek new information and evidence to make space for change. In the new light of spring, we can see ourselves, our beliefs, and our world through a different lens, and reconsider what we pay attention to.
Summer season: 10 May 2027.
What If You Followed It?
Desire, curiosity, experimentation, play, taking small risks,
We can follow an interest without needing to know where it leads. With the days growing longer, this season invites you to play, experiment, and explore your curiosity. We follow our desires and passions, taking small risks just to see where they might lead us.

Why art?
A few years ago, I'd have told you I wasn't very good at appreciating art.
I'd walk around a gallery convinced everyone else understood something I didn't. I assumed there was a right answer, that I hadn't learnt the language, and that art wasn’t for people like me.
Then I discovered the work of art historian Dr Victoria Powell.
Through her wonderful project, The Gallery Companion, she changed not only the way I experience art, but also the way I practise psychology. Instead of asking, "What does this artwork mean?" Victoria encouraged me to ask, "What does this artwork make me notice?".
Today, I use contemporary art as part of my reflective practice because art invites us to question our assumptions, notice our reactions and consider perspectives beyond our own. It helps us sit with ambiguity instead of rushing towards certainty. As a qualitative researcher, this has become one of the greatest gifts to my own interpretive practice.
Art also reminds us that our personal stories never exist in isolation. The artists we'll encounter throughout The Reflection Room explore identity, belonging, memory, care, power and everyday life. Their work invites us to consider how our experiences are shaped by the families, cultures and communities we belong to, and whose voices have influenced the stories we believe about ourselves.
Perhaps that's why art feels so deeply aligned with feminist psychology. Feminism asks us to question what we've accepted as "normal", to notice whose experiences have been centred, whose have been overlooked, and how systems of power shape our everyday lives. To appreciate art is to ask the same questions.
I'm endlessly grateful to Dr Victoria Powell for opening that door for me. If you're curious about looking at art in a completely different way, I can't recommend the archive of writing at The Gallery Companion enough, especially the audio essays. Victoria’s piece on Ai Weiwei and the question, Is all art political?, is a wonderful place to begin.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Art (including visual arts and poetry) makes us stop and notice. So does psychology. Both invite us to question our assumptions, notice our reactions and consider perspectives beyond our own. By weaving together psychology, contemporary art, and poetry, The Reflection Room helps us to see how we are shaped by the families, cultures and communities we belong to.
-
Guided reflective practice is an invitation to consider a question or concept. We use contemporary art and poetry as a jumping-off point, with a variety of activity and task suggestions (such as drafting a short poem, writing a word-association list, or doodling a self-portrait) to deepen the reflection.
-
In The Reflection Room, an audio reflection is a guided practice narrated by me, Leila Ainge. It includes my own reflection on the week’s art piece, with an invitation to think deeply about your own psychology. You can treat it like a private podcast episode, and you get four audio reflections in each season of The Reflection Room.
-

It’s me! A psychologist, researcher, and coach. I help people use psychology to work with more clarity, confidence and joy by bringing together research, reflection and practical insight. I also host the Psychologically Speaking podcast where I bring together research and insights with real-life experiences.

Every week you will receive guided reflection practices, audio reflections, and selected contemporary art, poetry and psychological research. How long you spend on your reflections each week is entirely up to you, but I would suggest a minimum of 1 hour to get the most from the season
-

The group calls are an important part of The Reflection Room, not only allowing you to meet and hear the perspectives of other members, but also to explore practices together and reflect on the season as a whole. Please do reach out, though, if the group call dates are the only thing holding you back, as I may be able to reschedule them.

You cannot join The Reflection Room partway through a season. Every season is designed to work as an eight-week container, starting and ending with a group Zoom session. The weekly materials build and grow your reflective practice, focusing on one psychological question throughout the season.
